Our athletics program is an important part of the daily schedule. Over the last decade, we have invested heavily in many new and unique state-of-the-art sports facilities. Campers are offered a well-rounded athletics program which combines instructional activities with in-camp tournaments and the occasional intercamp exchange. While some competition adds a healthy spice to athletics, we prefer to emphasize individual improvement, participation and achievement in sports.
In June 2008, we completed the biggest project in camp history with the opening of our Ice Palace ice hockey facility. This on-site ice arena, unique amongst traditional sleepaway (residential) summer camps in Canada and all of North America, proved to be a big hit with campers and staff. Hockey tournaments, bunk skate periods, and the nightly disco-skates featuring upbeat music are hugely popular. Approximately the size of a typical Montreal outdoor park rink, the Ice Palace rink is perfect for 4-on-4 hockey.
Ice Hockey: Campers interested in participating are divided into divisions based on age and ability, and the hockey staff conducts try-outs and a draft of teams. Teams participate in about 12 games (non-contact) during the summer, culminating in the championship series. Full equipment is mandatory. Hockey players have their own caged locker at the Ice Palace to store their equipment.
Free-skating periods are a fun way to stay fit. Interested cabin groups can schedule bunk skates, while music loving skaters adore participating in the nightly disco-skate after supper. Campers must wear bike or hockey helmets for free skating. The camp has installed the latest generation of skate sharpening equipment to take care of any dull blades.
The heart of any camp is its waterfront. At Pripstein’s, we are fortunate to own 80% of the lakefront on Lake of 3 Brothers, thereby ensuring a private, safe and clean locale for our waterfront program. The Quebec Ministry of Environment has consistently rated our lake water as “Class A Excellent.” There are no powerboats on our main lake, which greatly reduces the risk of boating accidents. Waterskiing, wake-boarding and knee-boarding, under the careful supervision of our instructors, takes place on our second lake, Lake St. Joseph. All campers are required to pass a camp swim test to qualify for the various boating activities. Campers are required to wear life-jackets or PFD’s in any watercraft. Pripstein’s owns over 40 watercraft, providing ample equipment for our extensive boating program.
We are proud of our theatre, the “Mishmar Centre for the Performing Arts”. It features stadium seating, professional sound and lighting systems and cross-ventilation for maximum comfort on hot summer days. The Mishmar Centre plays host to lip-synch contests, bunk & team skits, talent shows, our end-of-session dance shows, and our legendary rock & roll Sing Songs! Our future creative and performing artists can develop their skills in a variety of activities at camp.
In addition to the regular camp activity schedule, we plan many section-wide and camp-wide special events throughout the summer. Such highlights as Super Bowl, Colour War, Maccabead, Amazing Race and various other theme days & competitions, add loads of spirit and enthusiasm to camp life. And of course, our renowned rock & roll Friday Night Sing-Songs in the Mishmar Centre are legendary among Pripstein campers, staff and alumni!
